SUMMARY:Ciência 2019 - Science and Technology Summit
DESCRIPTION:Ciência 2019\, the Science and Technology Summit in Portugal\, is the latest edition of the annual meeting of Portuguese researchers. The event aims at promoting a broad debate on the main topics and challenges of the scientific agenda beyond the world of research. The meeting main goal is to stimulate not just the participation but also the interaction between researchers\, the business sector and the general public. \nThe event will take place at the Lisbon Congress Center\, between July 8-10\, 2019. \nRegistration is free but required. Register here for the full event. \n\nUT Austin Portugal Program at Ciência 2019\nEnhancing international collaboration in R&D to address major societal challenges – the UT Austin Portugal Program\nOn July 8\, the UT Austin Portugal Program will hold a workshop at Auditorium 3\, starting at 11:30\, where invited speakers will discuss the 5 areas of the Program. \nWorkshop Synopsis\nIn 2019\, we celebrate some noteworthy science anniversaries: 50 years have passed since the first moon landing; 500 years ago\, Magellan circumnavigated the globe; in 1869\, the first periodic table of elements was created. Although representing scientific achievements in distinct fields of knowledge\, these events remind us of how science\, in its aspiration to universalism\, has contributed to globalization\, breaking the boundaries not only of human knowledge but also of territories. \nScience itself has been shaped by globalization in many different ways. The increasing support of governments and of international political organizations to the development of international research agendas or to international research programs is a good indicator that science has never been so reliant on international collaborative efforts as nowadays. \nAt the same time\, the urgency of societal challenges such as climate change\, population growth\, social inclusion\, health and well-being\, just to list a few\, calls for well-orchestrated cooperation among scientists from different disciplines and geographies. \nThe UT Austin Portugal Program has been establishing for more than a decade long lasting-relationships between Portugal and The University of Texas at Austin which build scientific research capacity and pave the way for impactful transatlantic R&D projects while tackling some of the most relevant global challenges. \nHaving entered a new phase in 2018 towards 2030\, the Program addresses a number of ground-breaking scientific areas where Portuguese researchers and industry professionals in Portugal deeply engage with their counterparts at UT Austin. \nThrough the lens of this transatlantic Science & Technology partnership\, we will examine the importance of enhanced international R&D cooperation to address major societal concerns. The workshop is particularly suited for Portuguese experts in the emerging areas of knowledge of the UT Austin Portugal Program and for S&T policy researchers / practitioners. \nProgram\nOpening Words\nRui Oliveira\, Co-Director UT Austin Portugal Program \nInvited Speakers \n\n“Big Data and Machine Learning in High Energy Physics”\nNuno Castro\, School of Science of University of Minho and Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas (LIP) \n\n\n“Space Assets: International synergies for resilient communities and ecosystems”\nVasco Mantas\, University of Coimbra \n\n\n“Graphenest – a provider of graphene-based solutions”\nBruno Figueiredo\, Graphenest \n\n\n“Radiation Effects: Physical and Biological Modelling in Cancer”\nMaria Filomena Botelho\, University of Coimbra \n\n\n“International Collaboration in Technological Innovation and Entrepreneurship – UT Austin Portugal”\nTeresa Mendes \, Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN)\, Area Director of Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the UT Austin Portugal Program \n\n  \n__ \nCiência 2019 is promoted by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) in collaboration with the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture (ANI)\, Ciência Viva that is the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture and the Parliamentary Commission of Education and Science. The event has the institutional support of the Government through the Minister of Science\, Technology and Education Higher. \n  \nFor more information\, please visit the official website.
