2007 – 2017
The first decade of the UT Austin Portugal Program established the foundations of a long-term transatlantic partnership while progressively expanding its scope and ambition.
Launched in 2007, the Program began by building strong academic connections between Portugal and The University of Texas at Austin. Early efforts focused on developing dual-degree programs, promoting scientific exchange, and creating a new model for international collaboration in science, technology, and higher education.
From 2013 onwards, the Program entered a phase of consolidation and growth. Joint research activities were strengthened across key scientific areas, and collaboration between academia and industry became a central focus.
Together, these two phases laid the groundwork for a mature, impact-driven partnership that continues to evolve today.
2018 – 2023
During Phase III, the Program deepened transatlantic cooperation across advanced computing, medical physics, nanotechnology, and space-earth interactions. It also established high-level training initiatives, expanded researcher mobility, and delivered tangible outputs, from publications to spin-offs, bridging academic excellence with societal and industrial relevance.
2025 – 2030
Phase IV marks a new chapter of continuity and ambition. Building on more than 15 years of collaboration, the Program focuses on strategic areas such as clean energy, advanced computing, nanotechnologies, and space-earth technologies. It reinforces research excellence, innovation capacity, and transatlantic mobility, driving solutions for a more sustainable, digital, and resilient future.
