TechLaunch: From Invention to Impact (2026 edition)

TechLaunch is an advanced, hands-on entrepreneurship bootcamp designed to help researchers and innovators explore the market potential of science- and engineering-based ideas.

Modeled after the NSF I-Corps™ approach, the program supports early-stage teams in testing their value proposition, engaging directly with potential customers and stakeholders, and taking practical steps toward real-world impact.

The 2026 edition is developed under the UT Austin Portugal Program in collaboration with ANI – Agência Nacional de Inovação, S.A. and funded by Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and European Union’s NextGenerationEU program.

Team Structure & Eligibility

The program is built for researchers, Ph.D. students, and early-stage teams in Portugal. Each team can have up to 4 members and must explicitly include:

  • 1 Entrepreneurial Lead (EL): Focused on customer discovery and market validation.
  • 1 Technical Lead (TL): Responsible for the technological development of the project.
  • Team Mentor (TM): Optional role for someone with industry/entrepreneurial experience.

Note: All team members must reside in Portugal and hold an active affiliation with a Portuguese institution throughout the program.


Financial Model & Support

  • Teams have access to an indicative planning ceiling of up to 规律€30,000 to fund validation activities, prototyping (capped at €5,000), and travel to Porto and Austin.
  • Centralized Management: Expenses are contracted and paid directly by INESC TEC. No direct grant or cash is given to teams.
  • Non-Eligible Costs: Team salaries, stipends, visa/passport fees, or travel insurance are not covered.

  • Aprille (Raabe) Busch, Esq. – Executive Director, Southwest I-Corps Hub, UT Austin. Teaches national I-Corps programs and SBIR bootcamps. Former senior counsel in the U.S. Senate.
  • Weston Waldo, MBA – Program Manager, Southwest I-Corps | Director, TEXVMS, UT Austin. Certified NSF instructor who has guided over 1,800 deep-tech and hardware teams.
  • Jessica Fleenor – Teaching Assistant, Southwest I-Corps Hub, UT Austin. Director of OwlSpark accelerator at Rice University, specializing in venture acceleration.

What is expected from participants?
Participants must actively engage in all sessions, attend mandatory opening/closing weeks in person, and conduct at least 100 customer discovery interviews during the 7 weeks.
Do teams receive the €30,000 directly as cash?
No. Support is administered through a centralized model where INESC TEC pays providers directly for your travel, tool subscriptions, and prototyping needs up to the specified ceiling.
What kind of projects are eligible?
Projects must have a deep-tech profile based on solid scientific or engineering foundations, presenting a non-trivial technical challenge. It is not intended for already commercialized software/services.
Are salaries or payments to team members covered?
No, salaries, stipends, or honoraria for team members are strictly non-eligible expenses under the PRR framework.
