April 2021
The first 2021 newsletter from the UT Austin Portugal Program includes the 2020 Annual Report, our new podcast series (Cross Talks) and exclusive interviews with Pedro Camanho (Area Director of Space-Earth Interactions in Portugal), Ricardo Mendes (CEO of Tekever) and 4 participants of the Advanced Computing Training Program initiative.

Today, more than ever, all nations should be united to face the societal challenges our generation faces. International collaboration and cooperation can be important pieces to accelerate efforts and present solutions. For this issue of our Newsletter, we have invited Ana Pires, Scientific Coordinator of the SOE’22 Workshop, the Program’s latest in-person event, to write about how international cooperation in space exploration is helping us address some of our planet’s most critical challenges.

As Mark Walport said, “Science is not finished until it’s communicated“. This year, the last one of the Program’s third phase, is the perfect opportunity to look back and see the results that emerged from our community’s perseverance and effort. Such results are able to shape the future, solve critical societal problems and give rise to new ideas and, therefore, deserve to be shared with everyone. This way, we focused this issue of our Newsletter on communicating the science beyond the past and present achievements of our community.

We headed into 2022, glad to be celebrating 15 years of outstanding achievements with our community: the seeds we had planted were bearing fruits. As we wrap the year up, we picked this edition to show our readers how we celebrated the Program’s legacy at the Annual Conference and how we are preparing the ground for the Program to continue feeding science-based knowledge into society and helping our projects progress. We also share inspiring stories from some of our community members and how small decisions or apparently unimportant events in the past can be game-changing.

The 15 years of the UT Austin Portugal Program lead us to reflect on our past achievements and future challenges. The summer break is right around the corner, and we can’t wait to take some time to rest and recharge. Nonetheless, before we set our out-of-office messages, we want to reflect on the Program’s activity in the past months. We provided our community with opportunities to learn, engage, connect, research, innovate, and grow. We never know what tomorrow may bring, but we can say that we are ready to model the future – always creating knowledge; always fostering change.

2020 will definitely be a year to remember – we grew stronger, became more resilient and quicker in our feet. A new year is now approaching. And we are optimistic that the world itself will leverage on the challenges it has endured. We will certainly carry this lesson with us in the years to come.

For many of us, 2020 is likely to become one of, if not the most, challenging and toughest years of our lives. We have had to learn to live and adapt to a reality that is closer to a sci-fi movie plot. But human nature is not used to lower its guard in the face of adversity and tends to come out stronger and better equipped to tackle new challenges.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. And what a year it has been! As we are about to bid farewell to another year, we can’t help but contemplate the last 12 months and realise what they meant for the UT Austin Portugal Program, what value we were able to create with the support of our ever-growing enthusiastic community and committed stakeholders.
