Hydrogen Day 2025

On October 7-8, the University of Texas at Austin will convene Hydrogen Day 2025, a two-day event dedicated to exploring the science, technology, and policy dimensions of hydrogen as a clean energy carrier. Hosted by the Energy Institute, the event will bring together researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, and students to reflect on the rapidly evolving role of hydrogen in the global energy transition.

Hydrogen Day is scheduled deliberately around October 8 (10/08), a symbolic reference to hydrogen’s atomic weight of 1.008 amu. What began as a campus initiative has grown into a national spotlight moment for hydrogen innovation in the United States, combining technical panels, policy discussions, and a student poster competition awarding $2,000 in prizes.

The agenda includes expert-led sessions on decarbonization pathways, energy security, and industrial deployment, alongside opportunities for early-career researchers to present frontier work in science, engineering, and policy. The UT Austin Portugal Program participates in this year’s edition with Filipe Joel Soares, Area Manager at INESC TEC and Assistant Professor at the Lusophone University of Porto, who joins on stage with Jeffrey Goldmeer (GE Vernova) and Amine Houssaim (INNOVX and HydroJeel) for what promises to be an insightful discussion on hydrogen moderated by Joaquin Resasco (UT Austin).

Showcasing Portugal’s Expertise in Hydrogen

Portugal’s leadership in hydrogen research and innovation is well-known worldwide. The Program’s participation in this UT event underscores not only the depth of Portuguese expertise in energy systems but also the Program’s role in connecting that expertise to international forums.

With Clean Energy emerging as a core area of the Program in Phase IV,  engagement with events like Hydrogen Day is not about visibility alone. It is about ensuring that the Program’s community – spanning universities, research institutes, and industry in Portugal – can connect directly with international partners and be part of the conversation on breakthrough technologies and strategies. Hydrogen represents one of the most promising vectors for a sustainable energy system, bridging scientific inquiry and industrial application.

By aligning with an initiative of this scale at UT Austin, the Program is also reinforcing the idea that energy transition is not a local or national challenge, but a global one requiring coordinated expertise, investment, and vision.

Event Highlights

Hydrogen Day 2025, hosted by the Energy Institute at The University of Texas at Austin to discuss hydrogen’s transformative role in the global energy transition.

The UT Austin Portugal Program took part in this international dialogue through Filipe Joel Soares, Area Manager at INESC TEC and Assistant Professor at Lusófona University of Porto , who participated as a guest speaker in the session on Hydrogen Technology and Industrial Innovation.

His intervention reflected both Portugal’s growing expertise in clean energy systems and the Program’s commitment to fostering collaborative research and innovation in hydrogen technologies, connecting Portuguese and U.S. partners in pursuit of sustainable, transatlantic energy solutions.

This participation also aligns with the Program’s broader objectives under Phase IV, aimed at bridging scientific knowledge, technological development, and policy relevance across sectors critical to Europe’s and the world’s clean energy future.
