Study: Nanomaterials and LEDs can destroy cancer cells

A study by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto and the University of Texas at Austin in the United States has revealed the potential of combining nanomaterials and LEDs to destroy skin and colon cancer cells, it was released today.

“We’ve shown that it’s possible to combine nanomaterials with LEDs to achieve effective and selective phototherapy against tumor cells. Unlike lasers, LEDs are safer, cheaper, and smaller,” explains Artur Moreira Pinto, a researcher at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and coordinator of the project in Portugal.
