Webinar 7: Three years contributing to improving Big Data Applications “support” in HPC | 2nd BigHPC Webinar Series

After the success of the first webinar series, the UT Austin Portugal Program and the BigHPC consortium are back with a second round of webinars, running every two months from March 2022 to March 2023, called Towards a new generation of Big Data & HPC applications. This time around, experts from academia and industry will meet to look through some of the most relevant scientific and technological advancements made in response to the challenges we have dissected before.

Webinar 7: Three years contributing to improving Big Data Applications “support” in HPC

In this last webinar the BigHPC project is going to share the outcomes and final framework devised along the past three years of work. This framework was developed to ease the deployment of Big Data Applications in HPC centers by means of using containerized solutions, while improving storage QoS for data-centric applications and providing a monitoring tool to validate the workload progress.

About the speakers:

Bruno Antunes is a research manager and product developer for Wavesys at Wavecom. He obtained the Electric and Computer Engineering degree, 5 years BSc, from the University of Coimbra. He concluded the curricular component of the Computer Networks and Communication Services MSc from the University of Minho, with the outcome of its MSc pre-thesis ”Modular Platform for Wireless Communications based on Open Source Software” leading to the launch of the Wavesys multi-radio platform. He is currently attending the PhD in the MAP-tele Doctoral Programme in Telecommunications. Prior to the current functions he also worked as an external consultant at Wavecom for the development and launch of the Wavesys multiradio platform and after that with a mobility scholarship from Wavecom at INOVA-RIA. Since January of 2016 he assumed tasks of R&D and R&D management at Wavecom in several funded projects, such as Wavesys, HiperWireless, MareCom, Mobilizador 5G, 5GPerfecta and BigHPC, while continuing to support the implementation and installation of the Wavesys radios.

João Paulo is currently an invited professor and assistant researcher at INESC TEC and University of Minho. He has obtained a PhD degree in Computer Science from the MAP-i Doctoral Program in Computer Science. Currently, João is working on large scale distributed systems with an emphasis on storage and database systems’ scalability, performance, security and dependability. Also, he is interested on the applicability of this research work for solving complex data management challenges for Cloud Computing and HPC centres.

Samuel Bernardo is a Software Engineer at the Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de PartÍculas (LIP), in Portugal. Graduated from Lisbon University with a degree in Computer Science and Engineering, Samuel is finishing hiss Master dissertation. Currently working on BigHPC and SQAaaS platforms development and in several national and European projects. Also an open-source contributor for several years supporting the community and free software.

John Cazes joined TACC in March 2005. Prior to TACC, he served as Outreach lead to Naval Oceanographic Office Major Shared Resource Center (DOD) users for Lockheed Martin. Currently, he serves as the director of the High Performance Computing group at TACC. He has over 20 years of experience in high performance computing in public and private industry. John Cazes relies on his background in HPC, astrophysics, and climate/weather/ocean modeling to support the wide variety of researchers on TACC resources. His primary research interests are parallel I/O and advanced architectures.

About the moderator:

Ricardo Macedo is a researcher at HASLab INESC TEC and a 4th year PhD student at University of Minho, advised by Prof. João Paulo and Prof. José Pereira. His research interests include local and distributed storage systems, with particular focus in Software-Defined Storage, programmable and distributed storage, and kernel-/user-space storage technologies. Currently, Ricardo is working on a Software-Defined Storage data plane framework for enforcing end-to-end performance policies in complex storage infrastructures.
